Contessa 1956

Lounge Chairs
CONTESSA is a modern-day rendition of the first piece of furniture produced by Wittmann after the war; a contemporary wing-backed armchair whose elegant curves and tight upholstery are reminiscent of a sportscar seat. Uncompromisingly comfortable, the internal structure is made up of integrated ultra-flat pocket sprung matting, sitting atop crisscrossed elastic webbing and a tubular steel frame. Unlike similar organically shaped armchairs, the cover is not simply bonded to the scooped seat; instead, it is hand upholstered using traditional methods. The spirit of the “good old days” has provided inspiration for what could be the piece of choice for the micro-apartment of the future.

Design Story

Jaime Hayon

Jaime Hayon

As a teen, Jaime submerged himself in the raw & bold culture of skateboarding and graffiti art, which years later became the foundation of his bold, yet whimsical silhouettes and imagery, so prominent in his work today. After studying industrial design in Madrid and Paris, he joined Fabrica in 1997, the Benetton-funded design and communication academy, working hand in hand with the legend himself, Oliviero Toscani. Quickly, he was promoted to the head of their Design Department. Years later, Jaime ventured off on his own, first with his collection of toys, ceramics and furniture, later followed by interior design and installations.

AVENUE ROAD carries a curated assortment of Jaime Hayon pieces.
